Artist Profile
General | | Biography: | The Belgium concert artist Evy Van Dongen, studied the clarinet with Walter Boeykens and Ivo Lybeert at the Royal Flemish Conservatory of Antwerp. In 2006 she obtained her Postgraduate Performance Diploma at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied with Nicholas Rodwell and Angela Malsbury. Evy has participated in master classes with Michael Collins, Pascal Moragues, Luis Rossi and Bernhard Röthlisberger. Since 2006 she has private lessons with Andrew Marriner.
Evy obtained prizes at national and international competitions. She was prize-winner of the 2nd International Clarinet Competition “Saverio Mercadante” in Italy. In 2007, she was the only wind player at the finals of the Grachtenfestival Competition in Amsterdam and her performance was broadcasted on the Dutch Classical Radio. In 2006 she got ‘Very Highly Commended’ at the ‘Geoffrey Hawkes Buffet Crampon Clarinet Prize’ at the Royal Academy of Music, in 2005 she received the ‘Harold Wrigley Alcock Award’ and in 2004 she was laureate at the Belgian Lions Club Clarinet Competition.
As a soloist, Evy has performed Mozart Clarinet Concerto at the age of 19 in Antwerp with the Youth and Music Orchestra. She has been invited to play “Das hirt auf dem Felsen” by Schubert (arr. Reinecke) in a version for solo soprano, solo clarinet and orchestra with the Belgian National Youth Orchestra in ‘Bozar’ (Brussels) and the ‘Concertgebouw’ (Bruges).
In 2005, she has performed the Weber Clarinet Concerto in f minor in Mons, Antwerp and Brussels with ‘Orchestre Cosimus de Soumagne’. She regularly plays with the South-African pianist James Baillieu. This great duo has had concerts in Belgium, The Netherlands and Great-Britain. Very recently, they had a concert tour with recitals in Cape Town and Tzaneen (South-Africa).
Evy has been involved in various chamber ensembles. Evy is founding member of the Ensemble 'Houthandel Antwerpen', laureate of the 2008 ‘Gouden Vleugels’ competition in Belgium. These 5 young talented wind players leave all boundaries between artists and audience. They share the repertoire for woodwind quintet with words, images and choreography.… a stunning experience. As a member of the Contrast Trio, future engagements of this ensemble include “L’Histoire de l’Est”, a very exciting chamber music programme with a selection of 20th century pieces for violin, clarinet and piano from Eastern European composers such as Stravinsky, Bartok, Martinu and Prokofiev.
Evy Van Dongen plays on Buffet Crampon Tosca clarinets, generously supported by Sir Ludo Smans.
During her Postgraduate Performance Study at the Royal Academy and at the start of her professional career, Evy has been generously supported by the Robus Foundation, Rotary International and Arcadis Gedas Belgium. She was awarded a scholarship from the Royal Academy of Music.
