General | | Biography: | CV
Andrey Chulovskiy was born in October 1953 in Omsk, Russia. He began to study music at the age 7 with Olga Semionova, following the direct line of Beethoven's tradition: Beethoven - Czerny - Leshetizky - Essipova, who was a teacher of Olga Semionova. Semionova (among her pupils was also composer, rector of the Moscow conservatoire Vissarion Shebalin) taught Andrey both piano and composition.
In 1967 A.Chulovskiy entered V.Shebalin Music College in Omsk, where he studied with Nelli Nagivina and Stella Mikhailova. After graduating from the college with a Diploma of Honour, Chulovskiy entered the St. Petersburg (former Leningrad) N.Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatoire, where he studied with renowned Russian piano teachers Prof. Boris Lysenko (he is a professor of conservatoire in Toronto now, and teacher of Glenn Gould music school) and one of the leading Russian piano professors Nathan Perelman (pupil of H.Neuhaus and L.Nickolaev). In 1978, Chulovskiy graduated from St Petersburg conservatoire as a concert pianist, successfully performing the recital-examination at the Glazunov Concert Hall. He also went over 5 year course of chamber ensemble in class of Prof Felizia Fondaminskaya.
In 1978-1983 he was a teacher of piano at the V.Shebalin music college and gave constantly piano recitals and chamber concerts, includes concerts on radio and TV. This time he often played as a soloist with Academic Omsk Philharmonic Symphony orchestra (concerts by Beethoven, Saint-Saens etc.) under prominent conductors like G.Provatorov, V.Titz, G.Judin. He also played concerts of chamber music together with talented instrumentalists Prof. of the Moscow conservatoire Igor Gavrysh (cello), Oleg Stolpner (cello), Michael Kugel (viola; now prof in Gent).
In 1983 A.Chulovskiy desides to continue his music education; he entered the Latvia's J.Vilol State conservatoire in Riga (organ department), where he studied with Peteris Sipolnieks and then with Larissa Bulava (both organists of the Riga DOM cathedral). He graduated from the conservatoire, performing a big recital (2 parts) at the Riga DOM on the famous Walcker organ. The Honoured Latvia chamber orchestra under conducting of Tovij Lifshitz took part in this Chulovskiy's recital.
In 1987-1990 Chulovskiy has completed his Higher education in aspirantura of the Moscow P.Tchailovsky conservatoire (doctorate level in Musical arts) under the guidance of prof Leonid Reuzman. He also studied the Bach traditions at the Stuttgart International Bach Academy, which based that time in Moscow during a few months.
In 1991-1998 he was a Professor of the organ and piano at the Novosibirsk M.Glinka State conservatoire (among former pupils -- successors, two professors of the conservatoire, as well as concert and church organists of Russia, Sweden, Germany, Ukraine (Crimea-Livadia), Columbia and South Korea), and a Head of the Siberian Organ Art Center.
In 1999-2006 he was a Head of own Center of composition in Novosibirsk, combined this activity with concert tours worldwide.
From January 2006 he lives in The United Kingdom.
CONCERT HISTORY
While Chulovskiy played successfully a lot of piano recitals, his concert history as organist is much more wide.
While studying in Riga he played recitals on Ladegast organ in Valmiera, on Sauer and Walcker organs in Riga conservatoire and University. While completing his education in Moscow, he gave recitals on Schuke organ: in 1989 he played the premiere of his arrangement of 'Polyphonic notebook' by Rodion Shchedrin, who was presented on this recital himself. In 1989 Chulovskiy has recorded this cycle on CD (that was the first Russian organ CD distributed by 'Melodia', Moscow and then by Sikorsky, Hamburg). That time Chulovskiy often played with leading Moscow symphony orchestras and choirs at the Grand Hall of the Moscow conservatoire (State symphony orchestra, Moscow philharmonic orchestra), performing with prominent Russian musicians. This time he was awarded by Certificate of Higher Category as concert performer, given by the USSR Ministry of culture.
Since 1991 up to 1998 Chulovskiy gave a lot of organ recitals mainly in Siberia as a leader of the Siberian Organ Art Center: the center based at the Novosibirsk conservatoire and united 7 biggest Philharmonics of other cities of Siberia, 2/3 of territory of Russia (Omsk, Krasnojarsk, Irkutsk, Tomsk, Omsk, Kemerovo and Barnaul). He organised and took parts on International organ festivals at the Grand Hall of the Novosibirsk conservatoire, where the big German Sauer organ (with mechanical action) was installed. Chulovskiy played the cycle of all Bach's organ works, a lot of music by other composers. He constantly took parts as author of radio programs, performed with prominent orchestras, choirs and soloists. Newspapers wrote: 'Public stands in a tickets-queue from 6 a.m. hoping to buy tickets in spite of recurrent 'sold out' notice'.
The new period started in 1998, when Chulovskiy began his concert tours worldwide. At first he was invited to give recitals at the Riga DOM-cathedral, at the St.Petersburg Capella (includes summer and Christmas recitals) and at the International S.Prokofjev music festival (Donezk), where he played on the organ, which formerly P.Tchaikovsky often played. 3 January 2000 Chulovskiy gives recital at the Grand Hall of the St Petersburg D.Shostakovich Philharmonic (Intern. music Festival) as one of 10 recitals of international cycle 'J.S.Bach organ music'. That was the first organ recital of the year on the boundary of millenniums (in presence of 2000 listeners).
From 1999 A.Chulovskiy started big concert tours in Europe. He played recitals in Weimar Herderkirche and in Divi Blasii Muhlhausen, on the organs built by J.G.Silbermann, F.Ladegast, W.Sauer, E.F.Walcker, in Predigerkirche Erfurt, a few times on Max Reger organ in Meiningen. From 2000 he gave annually recitals in Germany, Holland, Sweden, Switzerland, The UK, Italy. In 2004 he gave recital in Seoul on the beautiful American organ; in 2006 he was invited to take part in the International organ festival in Toledo.
Very often Chulovskiy includes into the concert programs his own organ music. While now (from 2006) Chulovskiy concentrates his attention mostly in composition, he are enjoyed to play the organ on Sunday on Harrison organ in Kerry (Wales), where he lives now. He continues to play recitals.
FROM REVIEWS
'... Performing famous Toccata and Fugue by Bach, Chulovskiy used the full tone, but sensitively, appealing to his audience. Playing rhapsodic passages he keeps the discipline of sounds and performs this piece not academically, but in a Bach manner'. Dr Uta Ziegner, 'Thuringer Allgemeine', Germany; review of recital, given by Chulovskiy on the Bach organ in Divi Blasii, Muhlhausen in 2005; transl. from German.
'... Chulovskiy's piece 'Voices of birds' is equal to the works, which was written under the skilful pen of Friedrich Schiller; this music sounded as if a group of feathery singers have gathered on the Rutli meadow... Not Wagner's mysticism but Chulovskiy's romanticism rather reflects the character of the legend 'Flying Dutchman' and the melody of the sea... Undoubtedly, Andrey Chulovskiy is a talented composer.' Margit Dressel, 'The fairy sound of the organ takes us on a journey. Professor Andrey Chulovskiy produced such sounds from the Reger organ previously unheard. (Review of the recital, given by A.Chulovskiy on the Max Reger organ in Stadtkirche, Meiningen). 'Meininger Tageblatt', Germany.
'... Music by Andrey Chulovskiy is like a picture gallery'. 'Evening Novosibirsk', Russia.
'... That was a brilliant and very accessible public performance; prelude and fugue of Johann Sebastian Bach played majestically'. Regina Arbouw, The Netherlands; review of recital, given by Chulovskiy in 2000 on the historical organ, restored by Flentrop, in Zuidekerk, Enkhuizen; transl. from Dutch.
'His preludes for organ -- a charming pearls'. E.Koers, critic, The Netherlands.
