General | | Biography: | Acclaimed mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly studied at the Royal College of Music. In a tremendous 2004/05 season, she sang Dido (The Trojans) at ENO; Sesto (La clemenza di Tito) also at ENO - for which she was nominated for an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera - the title role in Handel's 'Giulio Cesare' at the Glyndebourne Festival and she made both her Metropolitan Opera debut as Annio (Tito) and her Carnegie Hall recital debut. Last season she made a hugely successful debut at La Scala, Milan, as Purcell's Dido. She began the 2006/07 season with a triumphant role debut as Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier) for Scottish Opera before adding to her repertoire the title role in Handel's 'Agrippina' for ENO and returning to the Glyndebourne Festival in staged performances of Bach's 'St Matthew Passion'.
Her future engagements include a return to the Metropolitan Opera and to the Glyndebourne Festival; her debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Purcell’s Dido at La Monnaie, Brussels; Gluck’s Orfeo at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich and Octavian at ENO.
Her concert appearances include the Salzburg Festival, Tanglewood Festival, Vienna Konzerthaus, Berlin Philharmonie, New York's Zankel Hall and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw with conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Colin Davis, Daniel Harding and Philippe Herreweghe. In recital she has appeared at New York's Weill Hall; London's Wigmore Hall and at the Cheltenham International Festival.
Sarah Connolly’s recording of Handel arias with The Sixteen and Harry Christophers has been described as “the definition of captivating”. She has recorded 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn' with L’Orchestre des Champs-Élysées and Herreweghe for Harmonia Mundi (winner of an Edison Award); Mozart’s 'Mass in C Minor' and Haydn’s ‘Scena di Bernice’ with the Gabrieli Consort and Paul McCreesh for Deutsche Grammophon and Elgar's 'Sea Pictures' for Naxos. She recently released her first recital disc, ‘The Exquisite Hour’, on Signum Classics to universal critical acclaim. Her recording of the title role in Handel’s ‘Solomon’ will shortly be released by Harmonia Mundi. She is the soloist on the soundtrack by Sir John Tavener for the feature film 'Children of Men'. |
