General | | Biography: | The winner of the San Francisco Opera's 1995 Merola Grand Finals and an Adler Fellow, John Relyea has already established himself as a major artist with the opera houses and orchestras of North America, notably with the San Francisco Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, the Boston Symphony and Haitink, the New York Philharmonic and Sir Colin Davis and the Cleveland Orchestra and von Dohnanyi. He has appeared with the Royal Opera House, at the Paris Opera, at the Bavarian State Opera and for the Vienna State Opera. He sang the title role in Enescu’s ‘Oedipe’ at the 2002 Edinburgh Festival, returning for 'Der Freischütz' and 'Duke Bluebeard's Castle' in 2004 and King Mark in 2005 and made his debut at the 2007 Salzburg Festival as Kaspar.
Mr Relyea’s operatic engagements include Banquo and Raimondo for the Metropolitan Opera, Figaro in Munich, Nick Shadow (“The Rake’s Progress”) for the Royal Opera, Bartok’s Bluebeard with the Cleveland Orchestra, The Rape of Lucretia in Cologne and Vienna and Claggart (“Billy Budd”) with the London Symphony and Daniel Harding. |
