General | | Biography: | British bass Matthew Rose read History at University in Canterbury before studying at the Curtis Institute of Music in the United States. Whilst a student there he performed with the Opera Company of Philadelphia and for the Opera Festival of New Jersey. As part of the Britten–Pears Young Artist Programme in Aldeburgh, he has studied with such artists as Sir Thomas Allen, Ann Murray, John Shirley Quirk, Gerald Finley, Sergei Leiferkus, Malcolm Martineau and Roger Vignoles.
In autumn 2003, Matthew joined the Young Artist Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where he performed the roles of Sciarrone (Tosca), Wagner (Faust), Collatinus (The Rape of Lucretia), Steward / Sentry (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk), Jonas Fogg (Sweeney Todd), Schlemil (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Judge (Orphée) by Philip Glass and Montano (Otello). He has since returned to Covent Garden to sing Tom (Un ballo in Maschera), Zuniga (Carmen) and, in concert, Albert (La Juive).
In the 2005/06 season, Matthew sang the Monk (Don Carlos) and Mozart’s Figaro for Welsh National Opera and he made an acclaimed debut at the Glyndebourne Festival as Bottom (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) where he was the recipient of the John Christie Award. This season his engagements include Masetto (Don Giovanni) for the Royal Opera House and Colline (La bohème) at the English National Opera. Plans include Speaker (Die Zauberflöte) for the ENO; Bottom for the Royal Opera, Houston Grand Opera and at the Opera National de Lyon and Collatinus at the Teatro Real in Madrid.
In Concert, he has appeared at the Edinburgh International Festival as Eremit (Der Freichütz) and as Pogner (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) and he recently made his debut at the BBC Proms in Haydn’s ‘Heiligmesse’ under Noseda. Other concert appearances include Verdi’s ‘Requiem’ with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Mozart’s ‘Requiem’ and Strauss songs with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Belohlávek; Valens (Theodora) on tour in Europe with Haïm and Le Concert d’Astrée; Telemann’s ‘St Matthew Passion’ and Haydn’s ‘The Creation’ at Aldeburgh; Don Fernando (Fidelio) with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Mackerras in Edinburgh and London and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Dvoøák’s ‘Te Deum’ and ‘The Dream of Gerontius’ with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Forthcoming engagements include appearances at the Edinburgh Festival, the BBC Proms and concerts with the LSO with Sir Colin Davis, Daniel Harding and Michael Tilson Thomas; the SCO with Norrington; the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Dresden Staatskapelle with Mackerras and the Tohnalle Orchestra Zurich with Dutoit.
In recital he has appeared at the Chester International Festival and he has performed Schubert’s ‘Schwanengesang’ with Malcolm Martineau at St John’s, Smith Square and in Edinburgh. His recordings include Der Steuermann (Tristan und Isolde) with Pappano for EMI, Mozart arias with the Classical Opera Company for Sony, Mozart's 'Requiem' with Belohlávek and a solo recital for BBC Radio 3's ‘Voices’ programme. |
