General | | Biography: | Born in Milan, Claudio Abbado gave his debut at La Scala in 1960. He served as musical director of La Scala (1968–86), the Vienna Staatsoper (1986–91) and the City of Vienna (1987). He gave his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1966, who made him their artistic director in October 1989, and he left the orchestra after the 2001/2 season at his own request.
In 1988 he founded Wien Modern which has grown to become an inter-disciplinary festival of contemporary music held annually. From 1994 to 2002 he was artistic director of the Salzburg Easter Festival. Always interested in promoting young talent, he founded the Youth Orchestra of the European Community (1978) and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra (1986). He is also artistic advisor to the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. As a guest conductor, he has been invited by almost every major orchestra, having appeared in all renowned concert houses and festivals around the globe. The Lucerne Festival Orchestra, founded on his initiative, gave its maiden concert in Lucerne in 2003.
Claudio Abbado won innumerable international prizes for his CD recordings, which
include complete cycles of almost all the great symphonic composers, and he has received countless awards, distinctions and honorary doctorates, including the Siemens Music Prize in 1994. |
