Biography:Yves Abel has quickly established himself as one of his generation’s most exciting conductors. Recently appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Deutsche Oper, Berlin, he has conducted new productions of ‘Don Pasquale’ and ‘Simon Boccanegra’ there as well as performances of ‘Le nozze di Figaro’, ‘La traviata’, ‘Dialogues des Carmélites’, ‘Tiefland’ and ‘Carmen’.

A frequent guest with the world’s great opera companies, he has conducted performances at the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Seattle Opera, Opéra National de Paris, Netherlands Opera, Teatro San Carlo in Naples and at the Glyndebourne Festival. He has conducted new productions in Barcelona ‘Madama Butterfly’, Lisbon ‘Il turco in Italia’, Naples Gounod’s ‘Faust’, Dallas ‘Ermione’, Seattle Heggie’s ‘The End of Affair’ and Santa Fe ‘Così fan tutte’.

In the 2006/07 season he made his début at La Scala, Milan, with ‘La fille du Régiment’. Another recent debut was at the Vienna Staatsoper with ‘L’elisir d’amore’ where he has since returned to conduct a new production of ‘La fille du Régiment’ with Dessay and Florez. Future engagements at the Vienna Staatsoper include ‘L’italiana in Algieri’, ‘Madama Butterfly’, ‘Simon Boccanegra’ and ‘Un ballo in Maschera’. At the Deutsche Oper, Berlin plans include ‘La traviata’, ‘Carmen’ and ‘Le nozze di Figaro’. Other future engagements include Lalo’s ‘Le Roi d’Ys’ and ‘Les contes d’Hoffmann’ in Toulouse; ‘Lucia di Lammermoor’ in Naples; ‘Norma’ in Bilbao; ‘La fille du Régiment’ in Barcelona; ‘La bohème’ in Oviedo and his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

A French/Canadian, he has a particular affinity with the French repertoire and has won significant critical acclaim for his achievements as founder and Music Director of L'Opéra Francais de New York, with whom he has regenerated rare French operas and performed the world premiere of Dusapin’s ‘To be Sung’. Since 1994, the company has performed regularly to capacity audiences at the Lincoln Center.

Recent concert engagements include debuts with the Netherlands Philharmonic at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the San Francisco Symphony, as well as concerts with the Orchestre National de Lyon, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Toronto, Montreal and Bochum Symphony Orchestras, and with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, New York, at the Caramoor Festival.

He has recorded prolifically, including ‘Thaïs’ with Renée Fleming, Thomas Hampson and Giuseppe Sabbatini for Decca, ‘Madame Butterfly’ with the Philharmonia Orchestra for Chandos Records and ‘Werther’, also for Decca. He has recorded two discs of French operetta arias, one with Susan Graham and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra for Erato and with Patricia Petibon and the Orchestra of the Opera National de Lyon for Decca.
