Biography:This season tenor Joel Andrew Weiss sings Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Salt Marsh Opera in Rhode Island, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly with Eugene Opera and Ernesto in Don Pasquale with the Sinfoneta Mazatlan in Mexico. Also this season, Joel sings a concert of Italian opera favorites with the Queens Symphony, “opera pops” concerts in New Jersey, Connecticut, Chicago and Rhode Island and Mozart’s Requiem in New York and Chicago.

Last season Joel debuted with the Opera Company of North Carolina as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, sang Camille in The Merry Widow with Verismo Opera, concerts of Messiah and Mozart’s Requiem as well as singing the role of Mikhail Gorbachev in the musical Raisa.

Previously, Joel made his international debut as Alfredo in La Traviata with The Polish National Opera conducted by Jacek Kaspszyk. He also sang his first Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor with the Vermont International Opera, Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus and Rodolfo in La Bohème with The Maine Grand Opera, The Mikado, Susannah, and Beppe in Pagliacci with Eugene Opera as well as performances of Elijah and Rossini’s Stabat Mater.

Early in his career Joel performed leading roles in lighter repertoire including Eileen, Ruddigore, Pirates of Penzance, Rose Marie and The Grand Duke with Ohio Light Opera, Opera Theater of Northern Virginia, and Liederkranz Opera. Having grown up on the musical theater stage, Joel appeared regionally in The Fantasticks, Kismet, George M! and Once Upon a Mattress, as well as the hit off-Broadway musical Many a Good Hanging Prevents a Bad Marriage at the Manhattan Playhouse.

Joel and his wife Kelly are the founders of the St. Blaise Foundation; named after the patron saint of throats, it raises money for cancer research. Originally from Virginia, Joel is a graduate of the Catholic University of America, and now resides in Tribeca, NYC.
