Biography:Baritone Ryan Taylor, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, recently performed the role Dandini in La Cenerentola with both Opera Carolina and Piedmont Opera, and sang Guglielmo in Così fan tutte with the Bar Harbor Music Festival. During the 2004-2005 season, he bowed as Marcello with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and as Sharpless in Madama Butterfly with the Minnesota Opera, both to public and critical acclaim. He also performed Dandini in La Cenerentola with the Lyric Opera of San Antonio, Taddeo in L’Italiana in Algeri with Opera Santa Barbara, and made his Atlanta Opera debut in Carmen.

During the 2003-2004 season, he created the role of Voltore in the world premiere of John Musto’s opera, Volpone, commissioned by the Wolf Trap Opera Company, and was also heard as Marcello in Puccini’s La Bohème with Dayton Opera. Mr. Taylor performed in recital at the Kennedy Center and in Vienna; Virginia on the Wolf Trap Discovery series with Adriana Zabala and Kim Witman presenting Wolf’s Italienisches Liederbuch. Previously, he has performed Schaunard in La Bohème with San Francisco Opera’s Western Opera Theater, Harry Easter in Street Scene and Dr. Malatesta in Don Pasquale, both with Wolf Trap Opera. In 2001, he was heard as Dandini in La Cenerentola (Seattle Opera), Escamillo in Carmen (Washington East Opera), Starveling in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Maestro in Viva la mamma (Wolf Trap Opera Company), as well as Silvio/baritone soloist in I Pagliacci/Carmina Burana, Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and Ping in Turandot (Minnesota Opera). He has also performed in the Reno Philharmonic’s performance of Carmina Burana, Count Almaviva in the Seattle Opera Young Artist production of Le Nozze di Figaro, John Proctor in Robert Ward’s The Crucible with Conservatory Opera Theatre in San Francisco, and as Fritz in Opera Idaho’s production of La Casa Verde.

Mr. Taylor originated the role of Jim in the world premiere of David Conte’s opera, The Gift of the Magi, based on the short story by O. Henry. He has previously portrayed Marullo in Rigoletto, Taddeo in L’Italiana in Algeri, Schaunard in La Bohème, Dr. Falke in Die Fledermaus, Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas, and Grosvenor in Patience. In addition, he has performed comprimario roles in Der Rosenkavalier with the Atlanta Opera, and has participated in productions there including Les Pêcheurs des Perles, Norma, Faust, Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Turandot, Aida, Il Trovatore, and Nabucco.

On the concert platform, he recently performed Modest Mussorgsky’s Songs and Dances of Death with the New Amsterdam Symphony at Riverside Church in New York. Mr. Taylor has appeared with Steven Blier and the New York Festival of Song in several performances of “A Multitude of Sins”, and in the festival’s 15th Anniversary Gala. His performances with the Southeastern Festival of Song have included “No Song is Safe,” “ARTsong: A voyage with the muses”, “Our Love is Here to Stay,” and “Secrets of the Sky and Sea” in New Orleans, Dallas, Atlanta, and Bar Harbor (Maine) respectively. He has appeared throughout England, Germany, and the United States in performances including “A Summer Night in Vienna” and “Gilbert and Sullivan Galore!” with the National Symphony Orchestra, Handel’s Messiah, Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, Stravinsky’s Pulcinella, Schubert’s Mass in G Major, Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noël, and the Fauré and Duruflé Requiems.

Upcoming engagements include Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle with the Fort Worth Symphony, “generation m: modern masters from the mid-century to the moment” with the Southeastern Festival of Song, and the baritone soloist in Carmina Burana with the Bryan Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his concert appearances, Mr. Taylor revisits Sharpless in Madama Butterfly with Ft. Worth Opera, and returns to the Atlanta Opera as Paris in Roméo et Juliette. A student of Bill Schuman, Mr. Taylor serves as Vocal Consultant for the Bar Harbor Music Festival, is General Director of the Southeastern Festival of Song, and he resides in New York and Atlanta.
