General | | Biography: | Soprano Maryann Madden, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a performer of opera, musical theater, oratorio, and contemporary music. She has sung with Arizona Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Sarasota Opera, Utah Opera, Utah Symphony, Amarillo Opera, Tempe Little Theater, Bowling Green State University, Crossing 32nd Street Contemporary Music Ensemble, Arizona State University New Music Ensemble, The Grand Canyon Men’s Chorale of Phoenix, Assisi Music Festival, Rome Festival, Spoleto Vocal Arts Symposium, and Bel Canto Institute.
Ms. Madden has received vocal training from Gail Dubinbaum, Myra Merritt, and Charolette Sonne. Most recently she performed the role of “Barbarina” in Le nozze di Figaro with Arizona Opera. Her other opera credits include the roles of “Gretel” in Hansel and Gretel with Amarillo Opera, “Norina” in Utah Opera’s Tour of Don Pasquale, “Jano” in Jenůfa with Utah Opera, “Clorinda” in La Cenerentola, “Peep-bo” in The Mikado, and “Gianetta” in L’Elisir d’amore with Arizona Opera, “Käthchen” in Werther with Sarasota Opera, and “Santa Chiara” in the new opera, Il Poverello, with the Assisi Music Festival. In addition, she has completed Young Artist Apprentice Programs with Santa Fe Opera, Sarasota Opera, and Utah Opera. She has received additional operatic training at the Bel Canto Institute in New Paltz, NY, the Spoleto Vocal Arts Symposium in Spoleto, Italy, and Bowling Green State University where she received a Bachelor of Music in Music Education. Ms. Madden’s most recent oratorio performances include Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Magnificat, and Vivaldi’s Gloria with the Utah Symphony. She was also a Metropolitan Opera National Council District Winner in the Utah District and in the Arizona District.
Her musical theater roles include “Hope” in Anything Goes, “Dorothy” in The Wizard of Oz, “Laurey” in Oklahoma, “Nelly” in South Pacific, “Guenevere” in Camelot, and “Hodel” in Fiddler on the Roof. Ms. Madden attended the Civic Light Opera Academy of Musical Theater and the Carnegie Mellon University’s Pre-College Program for Musical Theater in Pittsburgh, where she received training in dance, drama, and voice.
Ms. Madden is currently singing the title role Maria in "Sound of Music" with Ash Lawn Opera Festival and will be returning to Arizona Opera in the role of “Papagena” in Die Zauberflöte in 2008. |
