Winner of Granada International Conducting Competition
Maestro Sergio Alapont was born in Benicassim (Spain). He studied in Valencia, Madrid and Munich, Germany where he won several competitions such as Davalos-Fletcher Foundation.
Maestro Alapont played freelance in Madrid Philharmonic, "Queen Sofia" Chamber Orchestra, Asturias Symphony Orchestra, Spanish National Orchestra, European Symphony Orchestra, and he was a player in the City of Oviedo Symphony Orchestra and an Asturias Superior Conservatorium teacher for several years. He has played with soloists such as Gabriele Maria Ronge, Jose Carreras, Teresa Berganza, June Anderson or Placido Domingo.
Maestro Alapont studied orchestral conducting in Madrid with Maestro Miguel Ortega and he also pursued conducting studies with Jorma Panula (Sibelius Akademie of Helsinki), Helmuth Rilling (Bachakademie of Stuttgart) and Masaaki Suzuki (Bach Collegium of Japan). In 2001 he went to New York to continue his orchestral conducting studies with Maestro Marco Armiliato (Metropolitan Opera House) where he was studying in depth the operatic repertoire and assisted Maestro Armiliato in productions of Madame Butterfly, La Boheme or Sly. After his Metropolitan Opera work, he continued his career in Italy, where he did Postgraduate at the Scuola Superiore di Musica di Pescara with the Maestro Donato Renzetti.
He has regularly conducted orchestras such as Vetusta Symphony Orchestra, City of Ceuta Orchestra, Cantabrico Chamber Orchestra, Musikene Symphony Orchestra, Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, Vigo Sinfonietta Orchestra, Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Sinfonica di Pescara, Bach Collegium of Spain, Silesian Philharmonic, Gächinger Kantorei of Stuttgart, Bach Collegium-Stuttgart, City of Granada Orchestra and The Danish National Symphony Orchestra (DNSO).
He has recorded for the label EGT Records César Franck Symphony in D minor, Mahler 1st Symphony “Titan”, and “Firebird” by Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky 5th Symphony. He also has recorded for Spanish National Radio and Television and the RAI.
In June 2003 he was selected for the Assistant Conductor International Competition for Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and he received 2nd Place. He also was selected to the the 7th Grzegorg Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors in Katowice (Poland) and the Malko International Conducting Competition.
Future engagements for Mr. Alapont season 2003-04 includes Bach Collegium of Spain, Orchestra Sinfonica di Pescara, Castellon Youth Symphony Orchestra as Artistic Director, Cantabrico Chamber Orchestra as Principal Conductor, Opera Studio Productions as Music Director, “Ariadne auf Naxos” by Jiri Benda, Leon Opera Festival 2006, Verdi Requiem and Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis in World Sacred Music Week of Florence 2006, War Requiem by Britten with the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra in the Palacio Euskalduna of Bilbao and in San Sebastian in the “Quincena Musical Donostiarra” Festival, City of Granada Orchestra, Cordoba Symphony Orchestra and Poznan Philarmonich Orchestra (Poland).
Recently he won the II Granada Competition for Conductors and he was appointed Music Director of the National Ensemble of Spain for Contemporary Music.
