General | | Biography: | “Paolo Pandolfo is one of the most important gamba players of his generation in the European Ancient Music scene” (American Record Guide)
He started his research into Renaissance and Baroque music in 1979 with violinist Enrico Gatti and harpsichordist Rinaldo Alessandrini. Then he studied with Jordi Savall at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. In 1982, he performs with Jordi Savall and Hesperion XXI, and plays with him all over the world until 1990, recording dozens of albums.
After he recorded his first big hit (C.P.E. Bach “gamba sonatas”) in 1990, he was named “gamba teacher” at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Since then he has concentrated his activities as a teacher in Basel whilst in his profesional life he has been playing around the world with artists such as: Emma Kirkby, Rolf Lislevand, Rinaldo Alessandrini, Guido Morini, Mitzi Meyerson, José Miguel Moreno and many others. Since 1992 he conducts “Labyrinto”, an instrumental group, which is dedicated to the gamba consort repertoire.
Paolo Pandolfo has played solo and with his group Labyrinto in Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany (Berlín, at the Philharmonic hall), Bolivia, Japan, United States, United Kingdom (Wigmore Hall, York Festival, Lufthansa Festival in London, Etc...).
He has recorded for radio stations and various TV programes from different countries. He has recorded for record companies such as: Astrée, EMI, Philipps, Erato, Harmonia Mundi, Tactus, Symphonya, etc... Nowadays he has an exclusivity contract with Glossa. His works inlcudes “Sonatas for Viola da gamba and harp” by J.S. Bach, “Pièces de viole” by Forqueray, and “Spirit of Gambo” (with Emma Kirkby) by Tobias Hume, wining important prizes: Choc (Le Monde de la Musique), Diapason d’Or (Diapason), FFFF (Télérama) and 5 Stars (Goldberg). His CD “Solo” was published in 1998 with Glossa and received the Gramophone Editor’s Choice.
Among his last works we can find “Labyrinthe et autres histoires” a CD dedicated to MARIN MARAIS, published in March 2000. The second part of this album has just been recorded in Berlin and will come out in March 2002. It will be titled “Le Grand Ballet”.
His last recording in the market (2001) are the 6 cello suites by J.S. Bach which he has transcripted for Viola da Gamba. This recording his considered in various countries as a big musical event and all the recordings that he has offered with this repertoire (Zaragoza, Seville, Madrid, Barcelona, (Spain), Boston (U.S.), etc...) have been a great succes). They say about him that he is the “Yo-Yo Ma of the viola da gamba”. The recording has already obtained “Gramophone Editors Choice”, “Choc du Monde de la Musique” and “5 Goldberg Stars”. |
